Attaching highest importance to the United Nations Programme to prevent and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has called for need to check the illegal movement of these weapons across borders.

It need be mentioned that India considers the POA programme effective in preventing illicit trade in SALW (Small Arms and Light Weapons).

This comes in wake of the fact that the India’s national security has been adversely affected by terrorism and transnational organised crime.

A principle objective of India’s border management policy is to secure its borders against illicit trade.
