India bags another gold; at Commonwealth Games 2018

Sanjita Chanu won gold medal in women's 53 kg event

Yet another gold for India on Friday as Indian weightlifters continued to shine at the Commonwealth Games 2018.

While Sanjita Chanu won gold medal in women’s 53 kg event, she overcame a stiff challenge from 2014 Glasgow gold medallist Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea.

A record-smashing Mirabai Chanu and a persistent P Gururaja claimed gold and silver respectively on Day 1 of the Games.

Again, Deepak Lather won a bronze medal in men’s 69kg event at the Carrara Sports Arena 1 in Gold Coast as he lifted 136 in snatch and 159 in clean and jerk for a total of 295kg to win fourth medal for India.

The 18-year-old from Haryana, competing in his maiden Commonwealth Games, holds the distinction of being the youngest to hold the national record as well.

He held the 62kg category national record at 15.

So far the country of India have won two gold, one silver and one bronze so far in the quadrennial event.
