After allegations of data harvesting from Facebook by a data analytics company, Indian Information Technology Minister Ravishankar Prasad said that similar attempts in India will invite strong action.
The company in fire for the data harvesting is Cambridge Analytica.
IT Minister Prasad, also the Law Minister, said that the government fully supports freedom of press, speech and expression and is for exchange of ideas on social media.
He, however, added that any attempts to influence the electoral process in India will not be tolerated.
The minister also took the opportunity to point out that the firm now under scanner had links with the Congress party.
According to the reports in leading western media outlets, Facebook profiles of nearly 50 million users were illegally harvested by the political firm and helped to create algorithms and models to successfully target swing voters with false messages and political ads.
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also facing pressure to testify in front of the US Senate. >
