Indian Railways has decided to offer Biryani as a standard meal variety in view of its popularity. Passengers in Mail and Express trains can opt for veg biryani, egg biryani and chicken biryani. Veg biryani will cost ₹80 (inclusive of GST), whereas egg and chicken biryani will cost ₹90 and ₹110 respectively. Railways will also introduce ‘Snack Meal’ with regional cuisine as a variety in Express and Mail trains. According to a notification, the ‘Snack Meal’ will weigh around 350 grams for just ₹50 (inclusive of GST). The menu and side dishes (like raita/pickle/salad/papad, if any) of the ‘Snack Meal’ shall be decided and notified by IRCTC.
The circular issued by the Ministry of Railways said rail catering services prices have been hiked keeping in consideration the requests received from IRCTC and the recommendation of the menu and tariff committee set up by the board.
For passengers of Mail/Express trains, the present cost of Janta Meal i.e. ₹20 shall remain unchanged. IRCTC shall continue to make available Janta Meal, which consists of 7 pooris and dry potatoes. It was also decided to add chicken curry as an option in standard non-veg meals in Mail and Express trains, stated the notification. No a-la-carte meals shall be permitted for sale on Mail/Express trains. However, snack items like samosa, pakoda, etc may continue.
