A statement from election commissioner OP Rawat has fueled speculations if the central government might be preparing for simultaneous legislative and parliamentary elections. Participating in a program in Madhya Pradesh, election commission OP Rawat said that Election Commission of India is capable of organizing simultaneous elections beyond September 2018. He said that central government has even provided enough funds for fulfilling the requirement of 40 lakh Electronic Voting Machines with VVPAT system. It need be mentioned that many of the leaders in ruling BJP are also of the view that simultaneous voting for two elections would take the pressure of government and will make the system more efficient. While five major assembly elections are scheduled in 2018, the national election are set for 2019.
