Jammu & Kashmir Police chief Dr S P Vaid today said that two persons have been arrested over the alleged lynching of Dy SP Mohammad Ayub Pandit in Srinagar last night.
Vaid told media after laying wreath on the mortal remains of the police officer that a third one involved in the case has been identified. The Police chief said the rest of those guilty will too face the law. Pandit was allegedly beaten to death outside Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar last night.
According to reports, a group of youth caught hold the DySP Ayub Pandit in civilian clothes outside Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta and thrashed him. In the melee, Ayub Pandit opened fire upon them resulting into injuries to three persons. Reports said the mob around him snatched his pistol and beat the police officer to death. The three injured persons have been hospitalized.
The incident happened when Shab-e-Qadr prayers were under way in the historic mosque.
