John Abraham has announced another collaboration with its director and producer Nikkhil Advani. According to a report , the two are in the midst of laying the groundwork for a historic football-themed film titled 1911.
The Mohun Bagan team that defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1911.
Set in Kolkata in pre-independence India, the film tells the story of the now famous Mohun Bagan Athletic Club which started its Indian Football Association (IFA) Shield campaign in 1911.
The team made it to the finals in which it faced off with the East Yorkshire Regiment, an elite branch of the British army. Most of the Indian players played barefoot. Scores of spectators showed up for the match which resulted in a landmark win for the Indian club against the British.
Report quoted John as saying,John Abraham, ActorI believe football is the new cricket today and this film will make the sport palatable to the masses.
What makes 1911 special is that it is not just about the players or even the game, it’s also about India’s freedom struggle. It wasn’t just a sporting victory, the match broke the myth that the British were unbeatable.
John is set to play the team’s captain Shibdas Bhaduri, though the remaining cast is still to be decided. The film is expected to go on floors by November 2019 with an aim for a mid-2020 release.>
