Jolt to China as Malayasia moves away from $20 billion East Coast Rail Link project

In yet another setback for the China and its bid to use debt and infra as way of extending its influence over other countries, Malaysia has decided on scrapping $20 billion East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

The move was confirmed by none less than Malaysia’s Minister.

The project was with contractor China Communications Construction Co Ltd (CCCC).

Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali told media persons that Malaysia would welcome investment from China on a case by case basis.

The ECRL project is one of the biggest China has signed under its signature Belt and Road initiative, as well as one of state-owned contractor CCCC’s largest railway projects.
