Priest who was witness in Franco Mulakkal rape case, found dead

Kattuthara, 62, found dead at a church where he used to live

Jalandhar.

Kuriakose Kattuthara, a priest who was a witness in the rape case against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, has been found dead.

Kattuthara’s body was found in Dasuya, near Jalandhar in northern Punjab. Mulakkal, who denies the charges against him, was recently relieved of his duties at the Jalandhar Diocese.

Mulakkal was granted conditional bail on October 15, and was welcomed with rose petals in Jalandhar a few days later.

Kattuthara, 62, was found dead at a church where he used to live, a Deputy Superintendent of Police told the media. The officer said he’d been informed that no injuries were found.

Kattuthara had vomited over the bed, and blood pressure tablets were found at the spot, the officer said, adding that no security had been provided to the priest. Kattuthara’s brother said he suspected the priest was murdered, and that he’d been threatened before.

He said he and others were on their way to file a complaint, and that they would travel to Jalandhar later.
