Head of the Jalandhar diocese of the Catholic Church Bishop Franco Mulakkal, approached the Kerala High Court on Tuesday seeking anticipatory bail in the case accusing him of raping a nun.
In her complaint filed before Kuravilangad police station in Kottayam, the nun had alleged that she has been raped and sexually exploited 14-times by the bishop since May 2014. The police has issued notice to the Bishop asking him to appear for interrogation on September 19.
According to the Bishop’s petition, the allegations levelled by the nun were “wholly concocted and cooked up only to wreak vengeance for the action taken against the nun on the basis of various complaints against her.
She was removed from the post of Mother Superior and Kerala in-charge on a complaint from her cousin and another nun.
“Therefore, she was inimical towards him as she was under the firm belief that he was the one who had taken action against her.”
He added that he was falsely implicated in the case. The complaint of the nun was “nothing but a fictional story” and “ part of a vicious programme to bring down the Applicant who is holding a very high post in the congregation”.
The Bishop in his petition also said that the nun, in her first statement given to the police, did not have a case that there was forceful sexual intercourse.
Her conspicuous silence of more than four years on the incident was yet another indicator of the false nature of the allegation, he pointed out.>
