Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s daughter,Veena T,married the president of the youth wing of the CPI(M),PA Mohammed Riyas,in a simple ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.
At least 50 people participated in the ceremony,which was held in the chief minister’s official residence.
Veena is the managing director of Exalogic Solutions Pvt Ltd, a start-up company based in Bengaluru, and Riyas, an advocate and the president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
This is the second marriage for both Riyas and Veena. Riyaz has two children, while Veena has a son from their respective previous marriages.
Muhammad Riyas, who has become a household figure in Kerala homes through his frequent appearances in news channel debates, entered politics when he was a student. He was the former national joint secretary of DYFI, which is the youth organisation of CPI(M). He was appointed DYFI’s president in February 2017. Riyas is the son of PM Abdul Khader and KM Ayishabi.
Riyas led the ‘Beef Cooking’ protests against the Centre’s move to ban sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter, in 2017. Riyas was also fielded as the CPI(M) candidate for Lok Sabha elections from Kozhikode in 2009 but he lost to MK Raghavan of UDF by over 800 votes.
While the marriage has already been registered recently,the wedding event was a closed door affair,with just very close relatives of the couple besides a few senior party colleagues of Vijayan.
