The viral posts of hartal or strike that went about in various social media platforms of Kerala had left the police clueless and looking to curb the menace.

It is during this probe that the state police has now arrested five people in this connection.

It is said that these five people were the admins of WhatsApp groups that had called the hartal to protest against the rape of an eight-year-old in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir.

The posts had gone viral on April 16 of this year itself.

The hartal eventually turned violent in some places and shops forcefully shut down and protesters pelting stones at buses and attacking police personnel.

Police claims that the five persons alleged called for a hartal through a WhatsApp group named ‘Voice of Youth’.

Also all of the five are natives of Kollam and were reportedly arrested in Thiruvananthapuram.

WhatsApp groups were under scanner after the hartal made an impact.

The April 16 hartal hit normal life in several districts including the northern districts and Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
