Forty firefighters have been sent to the blaze, in Chesterfield Street, Mayfair, after a 999 call at 9.16am today.

The London Fire Brigade told The Telegraph there was no indication as to the cause of the fire yet, but confirmed the fire was affecting the extraction system of a restaurant in Curzon Street and was not at the Saudi embassy.

A Lebanese restaurant backs onto the lawn at the front of the embassy, although it was not immediately clear if this was the building fire.

Images posted to social media showed a terraced building adjacent to the embassy in Mayfair engulfed in flames with fire crews attending to it.

Members of the public reported hearing explosions, but the fire brigade did confirm the reports.

London Fire Brigade received 15 calls about the fire, and sent crews from Soho, Lambeth, Chelsea and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said it was aware of the incident.
