Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh both claim ‘Kadaknath chicken’; who’ll win it

informed that Madhya Pradesh is likely to get the GI nativity tag for the tan-blooded bird

It seems two more states are locked in ownership battle over the Kadaknath chicken just as West Bengal and Odisha struggled to own the ‘Rossogolla’.

It has now emerged that while while Madhya Pradesh had applied for the Geographical Indication or GI tag for this black chicken breed in 2012, Chhattisgarh applied for the same only recently.

It need be mentioned that Kadaknath chicken is a breed of chicken, also known as Kali Masi, is well-known for its high nutritional value.

Sources informed that Madhya Pradesh is likely to get the GI nativity tag for the tan-blooded bird.

This after the Gramin Vikas Trust of Jhabua applied for the GI tag in 2012 on behalf of the tribal families involved in breeding it.

This was also confirmed by the Madhya Pradesh animal husbandry department’s official.

It sure is a good source of livelihood for tribals.

But a private company called Global Business Incubator Private Limited or GBIPL was recently assigned the task of assisting tribals through livelihood generation in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.

Now the Dantewada administration with the assistance of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry or FICCI has also applied for the GI tag to be able to take advantage of uniqueness and high production of Kadaknath in the district of Chhattisgarh.
