New Cong chief allotted fourth row seat;party leaders spoke their views
Despite being elevated the the post of Congress President, Rahul Gandhi was allotted a fourth-row seat at the Republic Day parade and it was certain that this would have created controversy.
This even as the Defence Ministry officials maintained that the special dispensation that gave Sonia Gandhi a front-row seat had not been extended to the new Congress president.
Congress members are furious at the arrangement and accused the government of indulging in cheap politics at this stage.
Many of the Congress politicians spoke off the record though. They pointed out that the former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had been seated in the front row the last three years.
Defence ministry sources on their part reiterated there was no violation of protocol set out by the warrant of precedence according to which the leaders of political parties come down the order. >
