New US NSA spells out need to ‘strike balance’ with Pakistan

He opined that the country might become another Iran or North Korea if pushed too hard

The new occupant to the chair of US National Security Advisor (NSA) is John Bolton and despite having the reputation of being hawkish has shocked the world community by opining that Pakistan needs to be dealt with no firmly.

Bolton has been a former US ambassador to the UN and is of the opinion that Pakistan, a nuclear weapons state, is on the brink of embracing Islamic extremism and terror.

He opined that the country might become another Iran or North Korea if pushed too hard.

This comes in sharp contrast to the Donald Trump’s policy on Afghanistan which entailed putting pressure on Pakistan to end safe havens to agents of chaos and terror.

Bolton said the problem with such an approach is that it might lead to a situation where anti-US sentiment fuels popular support for Islamist radicals and the Taliban.

He said that influence of China is far greater than that of US and thus the China is the key to keeping Pak in order.
