NITI Ayog CEO names states lagging on social indicators

The comment has been made especially on social indicators parameters

With some of them being BJP ruled states for quite some time, the revelation from NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant that the states in India’s eastern region like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are keeping India backward would create difficulties.

The comment has been made especially on social indicators parameters.

He was speaking at the first Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Memorial Lecture at Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Amitabh Kant named Bihar, UP, Chattisgarh, MP, and Rajasthan for keeping India backward and added that while there has been improvement in ease of doing business, the backwardness is on human development index.

Kant further said that India is still 131 out of 188 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI).

It is in this context that the Aspirational Districts Programme is being worked on.

He said that education and health are vital and in these two areas India is lagging behind.

Even the infant mortality rates are very high, he expressed concern.
