To suit its Make In India initiative and also to continue to cooperate with Russia in defence, the Indian government has firmed up plans to manufacture the famous Kalashnikov rifles in India itself.
The rifles to be manufactured here will most likely be of AK-103 specifications.
It is learnt that process in this regard will be paced up as swiftly a well.
The major decision has been finalized in wake of visit of Indian defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Russia.
India wants to expedite the project at the earliest so that the rifles can be produced in country itself.
The Army, however, recently put out new specifications for a 7.62 calibre for its assault rifle of which a small number of a ‘hi-tech rifles’ will be imported for its frontline troops.
It is being said that the arrangement would encompass having a Kalashnikov factory in India in collaboration with the OFB and it will cater to its military needs though there would be no bar on export.
