To celebrate the pious occasion of Kartik Purnima, the people of Odisha mostly congregated near water bodies.
As per their tradition, they also floated toy boats with diyas placed on them.
It is said that tradition mandates that lighted lamps (diya) must also be accompanied with betel leaves, flower, milk, supari, cracker fruits and coins.
It is said to be a thousand years old boat festival called Boita Bandana.
Boita Bandana is a mass commemoration of the maritime glory of the people of Odisha, which was known as Kalinga in ancient times.
It need be mentioned that ancient oriental traders sailed from Kalinga to distant lands such of Sri Lanka and South-East Asia mostly to Java, Sumatra, Bali for trade.
During the auspicious month of Kartik, people give up non vegetarian food.>
