Om Prakash Rawat to take over as new poll panel chief; heres more on him

A former Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer, Om Prakash Rawat was yesterday confirmed to be the next Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Rawat will succeed incumbent Achal Kumar Jyoti to the post.

Sunil Arora is the other commissioner in the poll panel.

Rawat will take over as the CEC on January 23, as per a law ministry notification.

His tenure is to end in December this year.

It is likely that Sunil Arora might take over as the head of the poll panel as per convention.

Arora would retire in April 2021 and would oversee the 2019 Lok Sabha polls as the CEC.

This year alone, there is election in five major states of the country and national election is to come in year 2019.
