Opposition in Rajya Sabha demands privilege motion against media houses for carrying expunged remarks on mob lynching by Samjawadi MP

Some of the opposition members in the Rajya Sabha today alleged that BJP activists are threatening them for their remarks made during the Short Duration Discussion on mob lynching. Raising the issue, Samajwadi Party’s Naresh Agarwal said, youth wing activists of the BJP vandalised his residences in Delhi and Hardoi yesterday.

He said some sections of the print and electronic media have carried his remarks on mob lynching, which were expunged from the records.

He alleged, the media has violated the directives of the Chair and they wanted to move a privilege motion. Responding to this Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, the remarks once expunged should not be carried by the media. He said, if it is true, it is a serious matter and the government should enquire and take action.

Quoting Rules Book, several members insisted on moving a privilege motion against the media. However, Prof. Kurien maintained that there should be a notice before taking up the matter. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi observed that such notices should go to Privileges Committee first. Later, some of the opposition members trooped into the well raising slogans forcing the adjournment of the House for 15 minutes till Noon.
