Opposition parties meet RS Chairman; hand over notice of CJI impeachment

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told media, “We have moved an impeachment motion seeking the removal of CJI Dipak Misra.”

Representatives of seven political parties including that of Congress met Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu, also nation’s Vice-President, and handed over a notice seeking impeachment of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

The timing is critical as the move comes a day after the Supreme Court ruled out an independent probe into the death of CBI Special Judge Brijmohan Harikishan Loya.

The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told media, “We have moved an impeachment motion seeking the removal of CJI Dipak Misra.”

He said that so far they have been able to collect signatures of 71 MPs on the issue of impeachment motion (against CJI).

It is also said that seven of those who had signed the petition have since retired.

It is said that Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad played crucial role even as the idea is said to be of the left parties.

The other parties includes CPM, CPI, NCP, SP and the BSP.

Accusing the CJI of ‘misusing his position’, the senior party leader said that democracy can thrive only when the Judiciary stands firm.
