It was widely watched case internationally and human rights activists have reasons to breathe easy as Pakistan’s Supreme Court accepted the 2015 appeal filed by Asia Bibi.
It need be mentioned that Asia Bibi is a Christian woman sentenced to death on blasphemy charges.
So far the Court set aside her death sentence, as per local sources.
The case was heard by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar.
“The judgement of the high court and that of the trial court is reversed,” Nisar was quoted as saying by local sources.
A detailed judgment is likely to be available shortly.
Over 300 paramilitary forces have been guarding key areas of Islamabad along with the Supreme Court and residences of judges.
Asia Bibi was convicted under 295-C of Pakistan Penal Code for defaming Prophet Muhammad, an offence that carries mandatory death under Pakistani law.
On June 14, 2009, during an argument with three Muslim women, Bibi allegedly made ‘defamatory and sarcastic’statements against the Holy Prophet.
During the arguments, Bibi’s lawyer had argued that the allegations against her were ‘improvised’ and that she deserved to be given a benefit of doubt.>
