PM Modi addresses centenary celebrations of Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that Gurudev's vision is also the essence of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which is the path of India's welfare for world welfare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that Gurudev’s vision is also the essence of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which is the path of India’s welfare for world welfare. Addressing the centenary celebrations of the Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan through video conferencing, Prime Minister Modi said Gurudev wanted that the world should benefit from what is best in India and it should also learn from what is good in the world.

The Prime Minister is the Chancellor of the University. He said, India is spreading message emanating from Visva-Bharati to the whole world. The Prime Minister said, Viswa Bharati showed us, how to live and learn with nature.

He said India is the only major country which is moving in right direction to achieve environmental targets set under the Paris Agreement. He asserted that India is also leading the world in environmental protection through International Solar Alliance.

Remembering the heritage of Bhakti movement in Bengal, Mr Modi said, with Bhakti and freedom movement, Gurudev Tagore’s Viswa Bharati added new energy in knowledge movement of India. PM Modi also mentioned several Bengali freedom fighters’ supreme sacrifice.

Vocal For Local

He said, Gurudev saw viswa bharati as a place of learning and wanted to connect knowledge with living. The Prime also spoke about important of Atma Bharat and how students of University should utilize social media to help local artists in selling their products and thus achieve goal of Vocal For Local.

Quoting Rabindranath’s poems one after another Modi said, the idea of self-reliant India can be felt in his thought of nationalism. Mentioning Tagore’s visit to Gujarat & his literary creation there, Modi said, it should be seen as an example of Ek Bharat Shresht Bharat.

He concluded his virtual speech with Tagore’s poem, “ore grihobasi, khol dwar khol” asking the students of Viswa Bharati to open the doors of new possibilities & carry forward Gurudev’s idea of knowledge & philosophy of life.

Earlier, the celebrations started with lighting of lamp by West Bengal Governor. Students gave cultural presentation through Rabindra gaan. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ congratulated for centenary celebrations of Visva bharati.

National Education Policy

He said National Education Policy binds content with talent and is innovative and impactful. It is amalgamation of Indian knowledge system and Indian value system as envisioned by Gurudev. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar spoke about how Gurudev envisioned Bharat as powerhouse of progress and learning; his resolve of Bharat regaining its status as Visva Guru.

He also mentioned that National Education Policy which is rightly acclaimed as game changer in varied ways is influenced by Gurudev’s way of learning.
Founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, Visva-Bharati was declared a Central University and an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in May 1951.

Visva-Bharati acknowledges India’s obligation to offer to others the hospitality of her best culture and India’s right to accept from others their best. The University follows the pedagogy devised by Gurudev Tagore, though gradually it evolved in the format in which modern Universities developed elsewhere.
