Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to flag off the country’s first 12,000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive from the Madhepura loco factory in Bihar.
The flagging off will take place on April 10.
India invested in the facility to be able to join in the list of elite countries that have 12K HP or above electric locomotives.
The other such countries are Russia, China, Germany and Sweden.
The Indian Railways currently have 6,000 HP locos.
The new loco is expected to help decongest saturated routes by improving the speed and carrying capacity of freight trains.
The Madhepura factory is also a successful FDI instance French rolling stock giant Alstom.
The Rs 20,000 crore project is expected to roll out a total of 800 high horsepower locos over a period of 11 years.
According to the contract agreement, the first five locomotives will be imported while the remaining 795 will be manufactured in the country under the Make in India programme.>
