Neeraj Gopal, Famous poet who wrote lyrics of iconic songs like Ae bhai, zara dekh ke chalo from Raj Kapoor’s cult classic Mera Naam Joker and Karvaan guzar gaya, Dil Aaj Shayar hai has passed away yesterday after suffering from a long illness.
The veteran lyricist and Padma Bhushan awardee was 94. Neeraj’s daughter Kundanika Sharma told he was not well from past two years and was suffering from the lung infection.
She said, “He was with me in Agra on Tuesday when he felt uncomfortable after having breakfast and we immediately rushed him to a private hospital from where he was referred to AIIMS in Delhi yesterday.”
Kundanika said that as per AIIMS doctors, her father from a septic shock which leads to a low blood flow in the body. Talking about her father’s funeral rite she said, “We will reach Agra tomorrow and his body will be kept at Balkeshwar residence for people to pay their last respects.”
Writer-Lyricist Varun Grover, who penned yeh Moh Moh Ke Dhaage said; “The laya or rhythm of his poetry was the most attractive part of his work. The way his words smoothly slipped and floated as they made their way into his poems.
The most beautiful examples are, ‘Woh hum na the, woh tum na the’ and ‘kaarwan guzar gaya’.. In his long career of over three decades, Neeraj has achieved numerous accomplishments and will be missed by the entertainment industry.>
