Police probing death of tribal youth in Kerala; after ‘selfie’ incident
A man’s selfie with a tribal youth in Kerala is going viral on social media.
The tribal youth was severely beaten by a mob in Palakkad district of Kerala and later died while being transported to a hospital by the police.
Officials have said that they are investigating the photos and videos of the incident to nab the culprits.
However, the identity of the young man wearing glasses in the selfie has not yet been revealed.
Twenty-seven year old Madhu, a tribal youth from Attapady, was handed over to the police Thursday evening by a group of people who reportedly beat him severely on suspicions of theft.
The man had a charge of theft against him in 2016, an official at the Agali Police Station said.
Madhu, he said, lived in a forest and would often steal rice and other food items from shops in the area.
Locals have complained about him in the past, the police official added.
On Thursday, Madhu was allegedly caught by a mob from a nearby forest, tied up and beaten with sticks. Photos of a tied-up Madhu are spreading quickly online, inviting outrage.
At Mukkali junction, Madhu was handed over to the police and later transported in a jeep.
But when the jeep reached Thavalam, he vomited, the official said. While on their way to the primary healthcare centre in Agali, Madhu reportedly died and was declared ‘brought dead’ by doctors, police said.
The post-mortem of the body will be conducted at the Thrissur Medical College and the report will reveal more about his injuries,” the official said.
Police suspects that the youth may have beaten by the mob.
He said the police are looking for the accused in the case and will investigate the photos and videos on social media.
