September, is marked as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) awareness month. This syndrome occurs due to a hormonal imbalance in women once they reach an age that’s fit for reproduction.

Ovaries may develop collections of follicles and fail to release eggs as well. While its exact cause is not understood, genetics and environmental factors play a significant role.

Controlling your diet plays an important role to help avoid or curb the issue. These are the foods to eat or to avoid if you have PCOS.

Oily fish like sardines and salmon or even chia seeds are good sources of Omega 3 fatty acids which reduce the level of testosterone and will help regulate your menstrual cycle.

These fish items are necessary to add to your diets to help the PCOS issue.

Apples are low in glycemic index (GI) which is good for insulin sensitivity. They also have lower LDL cholesterol which is bad for the heart.

PCOS patients often are at risk for heart disease and hence eating apples are good for women who have PCOS.

Gluten is a hormone disruptor that interferes with the functioning of the endocrine or hormone system.

They could mimic hormones, causing our bodies to over or under respond or release hormones at the wrong time. Hence, if you have PCOS, it is best to avoid consuming glutenous food items.

Dairy, much like gluten, can be inflammatory in nature and so it is best to avoid products that can cause you to be lactose intolerant.

However, butter may actually be good for you as a source of healthy fat, so you don’t need to avoid it if you don’t feel bloated after eating it.

Research shows that soy can affect the thyroid function and ovulation. It also contains compounds that interfere with the normal functioning of oestrogen which can affect your normal menstrual cycle and thus your PCOS.
