In a significant gesture, Pope Francis has admitted he made grave errors in judgment in Chile’s sex abuse scandal.
Pope Francis also took the initiative to invite the victims he had discredited to Rome to beg their forgiveness.
Pope Francis went on to write a public letter, wherein he also summoned all of Chile’s bishops to the Vatican for an emergency meeting.
The meeting is likely in the coming weeks and the agenda is to discuss repairing the damage from the scandal.
It need be recalled that it was only in the case of American bishops who were summoned in 2002 after the clerical sex abuse scandal exploded in the US.
Francis strongly defended the bishop during his January visit to Chile despite accusations by victims that Barros had witnessed and ignored their abuse.>
