After criticism on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to curb fake news, the Prime Minister’s Office today advised the Ministry to withdraw its press release on fake news.
It is said that the decision on what amounts to fake news should be left to bodies such the Press Council of India or National Broadcasters Association.
It need be mentioned that leaders like Ahmed Patel had expressed concern of government interference through these guidelines.
The PMO’s directives pretty much seals the deal as the Ministry of I&B is likely to withdraw its press release on fake news.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had yesterday announced measures to contain fake news, saying the accreditation of a journalist could be permanently cancelled if the scribe is found generating or propagating fake news.>
