Priya Prakash Varrier, teen sensation, moves Supreme Court; urging quashing of FIR
Undoubtedly, she has become the teen sensation and some call her the ‘national crush’, but Priya Prakash Varrier had to move to the Supreme Court to demand quashing of an FIR against herself and the filmmakers.
The FIR had been lodged over her song ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ in the yet to be completed Malayalam film ‘ Oru Adaar Love’.
The Muslims groups have alleged that the song hurts their religious sentiments.
The petitioners have argued that ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ is a Muslim folk song of Malabar region of Kerala that was written in 1978 by PMA Jabbar in praise of the love between Prophet Mohammed and his first wife Khadeeja.
The FIRs, one by the secretary of Raza Academy with Mumbai Police and another by Janjagran Samithi at Jinsi police station in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, the film crew to move the SC through advocate Haris Beeran.
They invoked artists’ fundamental right to speech and expression and sought quashing of the FIRs.
It need be mentioned within days of the release of the film in social media platforms, the ‘wink’ song notched up a record 34 million views. >
