PV Sindhu was knocked out in the first round of the Denmark Open after a 17-21, 21-16, 18-21 loss to unseeded Beiwen Zhang.
Saina Nehwal moved to the next round after a close win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi.
Kidambi Srikanth cruised into Round 2 after defeating Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-16, 21-10.
PV Sindhu crashed out in the opening round of the Denmark Open after being stunned by unseeded Beiwen Zhang in Odense. Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth, on the other hand, moved on to the next round after winning their respective matches.
Registering thrilling win, World No 11 Nehwal defeated Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi 20-22, 21-17, 24-22 in a match that last 81 minutes.
Meanwhile, Srikanth too cruised into the next round after defeating Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-16, 21-10 in a match that lasted a paltry 35 minutes.
In a tense match, Saina had to endure a stiff challenge from Cheyung, who she last played back in 2016 and went on to lose that match.
The see-saw battle was a thriller down to the last point with the Indian saving two match points at 21-20 and 22-21 in the final game to emerge triumphant and move ahead.
Saina was also guilty of frittering away a match point of her own when she led 20-19 in the final game.
PV Sindhu Crashes Out
Third-seed Sindhu lost 17-21, 21-16, 18-21 to Zhang in her women’s singles match on Tuesday, 16 October.
This is the third time in a row that Zhang has defeated Sindhu. The last time they met, the Indian shuttler had lost in the Indian Open final in February this year.
With this win the head-to-head, that was earlier level, has now titled 3-2 in Zhang’s favour.
After a silver at the Asian Games, Sindhu had been knocked out in the second round of the Japan Open after a straight game loss to Gao Fangjie. In the China Open, the 23-year-old had suffered a 11-21 21-11 15-21 quarters loss against World No 6 Chen Yufei.>
