Rahul Gandhi in Shillong; attacks RSS on women and leadership issue

On poll campaigning in north eastern state of Meghalaya, the Congress chief Rahul Gandhi took on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) saying that it disempowers women and doesn’t have a single one in a leadership position.

Speaking in Shillong, he went on to say that in pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, women could be seen on either side of the freedom fighter.

But Mohan Bhagwat (incumbent RSS chief), he said, the leader or “sarsanghchalak” of the RSS is photographed alone or with men, he said.

What’s more, the Congress chief invited women in Meghalaya to join his organisation. He said balancing the number of women and men in the Grand Old Party was a priority.

Rahul’s criticism of the RSS’ attitude towards women isn’t exactly unprecedented.

Last October, he controversially asked if anyone had seen a woman in shorts at their “shakhas”, or meetings.

It remains to be seen as to how the BJP responds to this jibe.
