Earlier, it was Congress leader from Kerala, Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, who had been enjoying the status.
Congress sources said that while Rahul Gandhi enjoyed a following of 6.77 million on the micro-blogging site, Shashi Tharoor has 6.7 million followers.
Given the dynamic nature of social media following, the number may tilt back in favour of Tharoor in coming weeks.
Ahead of the Karnataka poll, however, this is welcome news for the party who is hoping to retain the power in the state.
