Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) is a procedure to treat an aneurysm in the aorta (largest artery). An aneurysm is a weak, bulging area in the aortic wall. If it bursts or ruptures, it can be deadly.NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Raipur is one of the few hospital in India to successfully perform this kind of procedure.
One of the rare and most risky case of TEVAR successfully performed by NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital’s cardiology team was of an 82-year-old lady, with history of hypertension.
Patient approached NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital,Raipur with a trouble of huge amount of blood in cough (large hemoptysis).Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist) said she was further investigated which confirmed that her thoracic aorta was dilated and was rupturing into airways (aneurysm of descending thoracic aorta penetrating to inferior branch of left bronchus).
Expert team of Cardiologists at NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital begin the treatment with blood transfusion to stabilize her, keeping in mind the age and medical history of the patient including hypertension. After she was stabilized, the procedure began for closure of dilated thoracic aorta and Fistula, which is the abnormal connection between the aorta and the left Lung (Bronchus). With a team approach headed by Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi and assisted by Dr.Kinjal Bakshi,Dr.Nitin Kumar Rajput (CTVS),Dr.Arun Adappan (Cardiac Anaesthetist) the procedure was successfully done on 20th of June. The patient was stabilized again after the procedure. The bleeding was no longer a problem and she was discharged 4th day after the procedure. She is now leading a good life.
The patient showed immense gratitude towards Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist) and the entire cardiology team, saying “Hypertension and my age were both factors increasing the risk. My family was really scared, and I was not so sure of what will happen next. But thanks to Dr.Padhi and the entire cardiology team who made my life better.”
Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist) says “The procedure was deemed very high risk because of the Age, significant tortuosity of the access and heavily calcified vessel.Hypertension is one of the common causes of this disease. But I have always had faith in my team, and we made it.”
Mr.Naveen Sharma (Facility Director, NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital,Raipur)congratulated the Cardiology team “She was the oldest person to undergo such procedure in the state, this is proud moment for all of us as we are able to serve our purpose so well.TEVAR and TAVI are in the list of rare and most risky procedures to carry out, which were only performed in metro cities but now NH MMI Narayana Superspeciality Hospital,Raipur have successfully achieved the excellence and is doing this type of procedures.Such kind of procedure needs meticulous planning at each stage and flawless execution of each step.I congratulate the entire cardiology team and specially to Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi for practicing such teamwork and making this difficult case successful.”
