Allegations are being leveled that very many journalists were also manhandled as the Delhi police tried to control the the march of the JNU students near INA market.
Police said that they were looking into these allegations.
It is said that the long march was headed to Parliament Street on Friday.
The police sources claimed that they had to resort to lathicharge and also use of water canons which left several students injured.
The march had been called by the JNU Teachers’ Association and the JNU Students’ Union to protest against privatization of education and demanding suspension of Professor Atul Johri, accused of sexual harassment by very many girl students.
Police claimed that its personnel also got hurt as the march refused to stop where they were asked to halt and chose to assault personnel and bring down the barricades.
The police detained 23 students around 6.30 p.m. following which the protesters refused to leave the area.
The march had been attended by CPI leader Brinda Karat.>
