In yet another major seizure of gold in Pune International airport, a passenger was apprehended with gold worth Rs 1 crore.
The incident is said to have taken place on Wednesday.
It is said that customs officers at the airport became suspicious of Saifula Nasar Dudgave, who had arrived from Abu Dhabi by Jet Airways Flight no 9W-513.
He was spotted trying to hastily clear himself through the Green Channel.
The officials noted his suspicious movements and he was asked to come aside and his baggage was thoroughly scanned.
Initially, nothing was found. But after seeing that he was growing tense, the customs officials decided to re-examine his hand and check-in luggage.
While going through two tin boxes, officials found one sewing machine and a cloth iron.
One metallic box that contained the sewing machine was dismantled and to the officer’s surprise they recovered 4.37 kgs of 18-carat gold valued at Rs 97,07,818.
Saifulla Dudgave was booked under smuggling charges and the customs team were investigating the matter with the possibility of exposing other people who were involved in helping the accuse, informed officials.
