A seminar on safety of dams in the state was organised here today by the Directorate of Energy in which Commissioner. CADWM, Union Ministry of Water Resources Dr. BRK Pillai participated as the key speaker.
While presiding over the session, Additional Chief Secretary Tarun Kapoor said that as per the standards of the International Commission on Large Dam (ICOLD), Himachal Pradesh had 21 large dams which were being managed as per the fixed norms.
He said that reports of dam failures had been received from the country from time to time but there had been not even a single case of dam failure in the state.
He stressed that need for timely inspection of quality and operational process of all the dams as per the fixed norms.
Dr. Pillai discussed various aspects of dam safety like dam failure, dam stability, instrumentation; reservoir stability etc. through a presentation. He said there were 5264 large dams in India and 437 other dams were under construction.
The project developers of the dams of the state including NHPC, NTPC, HPSEBL, SJVNL, HPPCL, BBMB and independent power producers also participated in the seminar.
Director, Energy Mansi Sahai Thakur and other senior officers of various departments were also present on the occasion.>
