Equity benchmarks, Nifty50 and Sensex settled in the negative zone on Wednesday after hitting fresh record highs of 10,552 and 34,138, respectively, as investors remained cautious on the penultimate day of the expiry of December series of derivatives.
The Nifty50 index closed 41 points down at 10,491, while Sensex settled 99 points down at 33,912 on Wednesday.
In the Nifty50 index, Sun PharmaBSE 6.89 %, Tech MahindraBSE 2.01 %, Dr Reddy’s, Wipro and Aurobindo Pharm BSE 0.99 % settled as the top gainers.
On the contrary, Indian Oil CorporationBSE -1.73 %, Bharti Airtel, ICICI BankBSE -1.53 %, UltraTech Cement, Bosch and Tata Consultancy ServicesBSE -0.82 % remained among the losers of the day.
Among the sectors, Nifty Pharma index jumped over 2 per cent, backed by gains in Sun Pharma, Divi’s Lab, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.
Nifty Media and IT indices too settled in the green.
Bank stocks incurred losses on Wednesday. Barring IDFC Bank, all component of the Nifty Bank index closed in the red.
As many as 152 stocks hit fresh 52-week highs on NSE, compared with 7 stocks that hit fresh 52-week lows on Wednesday.
Out of 50 stocks in the Nifty50 index, 13 stocks ended the day in the green, while 37 rested in the red.
