Sikh driver in Illinois reports hate crime; no arrest so far in the case!!
A hate crime has been alleged by a turbaned Sikh in the United States where the victim works as Uber driver.
According to reports, the incident took place in North West Illinois where the allegation is that a male passenger inquired with the Sikh driver as regards to his country and also asserted that he hated turbaned people.
The incident is said to have happened way back on January 28 of this year.
Sikh men in America, repeatedly mistaken for Muslims because of their turban-and-beard appearance in a growing atmosphere of Islamophobia, have been victims of numerous hate crimes.
Leaders of Sikh Coalition expressed frustration on Wednesday after meeting with Rock Island county sheriff that the passenger has so far not been arrested.
Investigators have interviewed the driver, the suspect and another passenger who was in the car, it emerged according to local media reports.
The Sikh Coalition said that the male passenger started asking victim driver Gurjeet Singh about his country of origin and which country he serves sort of queries.
The organisation said that Singh is a legal US resident who does not speak fluent English.
Gurjeet Singh’s parents still live in India.
After making known its dissatisfaction over alleged inaction in a case of assault by a passenger on a Sikh driver working for Uber last month in Illinois (US), community organisation Sikh Coalition on Thursday underlined that “three weeks later, no arrest has been made and no hate crime charges have been filed”.>
