Sri Lankan President to convene Parliament on Nov 5

Sirisena had prorogued Parliament till November 16


After a deep rooted political turmoil at home, Sri Lankan politics i again inching towards normalcy. With Mahinda Rajpaksha installed upon the chair of the PM of this island nation, the preident has decided to convene a meeting of Parliament on nocember 5.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to convene Parliament on to settle the ongoing political crisis, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha said on Thursday.

Speaking at an event at the Presidential Secretariat, Rajapaksha said Sirisena had informed him of his decision

The move comes after Parliament Speaker Karu Jayasuriya met Sirisena on Wednesday and urged him to convene Parliament to solve the ongoing political crisis which erupted after the President appointed Rajapaksha as the Prime Minister following the sacking of Ranil Wickremesinghe from the post last week.

Jayasuriya said he had received the signatures of 125 legislators, urging him to convene parliament to vote as to which party had the majority support.

On October 27, Sirisena prorogued parliament till November 16.
