In a tragic incident, a speeding truck mowed at least eleven people in Tanakpur in Champawat district.
Police sources said that close to two dozen are also injured in the horrific accident.
The group mowed down is said to be of pilgrims.
It also emerged that four of the deceased were children.
At least nine of the pilgrims died on the spot, police sources said.
All the victims hailed from Nawabganj in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district.
The incident occurred while the pilgrims were heading to the Purnagiri shrine on foot.
Army personnel from the nearby Banbasa military station launched rescue operations along with the police and local residents.
The injured were taken to Tanakpur hospital, from where eight were later referred to Khatima hospital in US Nagar.>
