Sri Lankan Navy has arrested eight Indian fishermen along with a boat near Delft Island on charges of poaching into their waters.
A statement issued today said they have been handed over to fisheries department for further legal action. With this, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 89.
However, process is on to release most of the fishermen in coming days. Secretary of Sri Lankan Fisheries department W.A. Adhikari told our correspondent that the fishermen will be released after due procedure. She also said that 42 of around 150 fishing boats in their custody will be released soon.
Sri Lanka has been releasing Indian fishermen from time to time on humanitarian grounds but the boats are not released.
