State government has ordered a probe after at least 16 infants died in Assam’s Jorhat Medical College and Hospital within nine days.
It is now known that the 16 newborns died in the hospital between November 1 and November 9.
But the hospital authorities are not in a position to state as to what caused the deaths.
It is said that while some of the babies had congenital diseases, others had very low birth weight.
A high-level probe team has been sent from Guwahati to Jorhat.
It is expected that a preliminary report might be released today itself.
According to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) superintendent Saurav Borkakoti, the deaths happened at the special care newborn unit of the hospital.>
