Subrahmanya Sashti Puja Vidhi

Subrahmanya Sashti puja is performed in homes with a great devotional fervor. Usually, the puja lasts for six days starting from the Prathama Thith (the next day of Amavasya or no moon day) and concludes on the Sashti thithi (sixth day of the lunar month during the waxing phase).

Wake up early in the morning, take holy bath and set up the altar with the images or idols of Lord Ganesh and Subrahmanya. In some houses, the spear or Vel, the divine weapon of Muruga is installed on a pedestal symbolizing Lord Subrahmanya himself and the puja is conducted.

Puja is done with the offering of flowers, incense, sandal paste, vermilion, turmeric powder and Prasad of the devotee’s choice and concludes with the chanting of Skanda shashti kavacham, Subrahmanya Bhujangam or the reading of Skanda Purana or stories connected to Lord Muruga.

Subrahmanya Sashti Fasting Rules

The fasting can be observed for six days or one day depending on the convenience of the devotee.

Non-vegetarian food is strictly not allowed on these days. Some people even avoid garlic and onions.

Devotees visit as many Subrahmanya temples as they can during the vrat.

Devotees take the only single meal on the days either the lunch or the dinner.

Some devotees stick to fruits, coconut water, and juices alone on all the six days.

The true essence of vrat is non-utterance of falsehood, not getting anger.

Subrahmanya Sashti Vrat Story

When a demon named Surapadma was troubling the three worlds on account of the invincible boons he received, the gods approached Lord Shiva. Lord Subrahmanya was manifested by Shiva from his third eye through six effulgent sparks.

Growing as six children and later unified as one child with six faces by Mother Parvati, Lord Muruga received the divine spear (Vel) from his mother and set out to conquer the demon.

The fight lasted for six days and the demon was vanquished on the Sashti day. Owing to the prayers of the demon, Lord Muruga bestowed immortality on him by converting him as a peacock, which became His vehicle and Cock that took a permanent place in the flag of Muruga.

Subrahmanya Sashti Benefits

The Subrahmanya Sashti Vrat is highly efficacious and is said to win the blessings of Lord Subrahmanya and confer all prosperity on the devotees. This is highly famous in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

A legend says that a King named Muchukunda of the Puranic times observed this vrat at the behest of sage Vasishta and attained immortal fame and a vast expanse of an empire stretching over all the three worlds.
