Supreme Court asks Tamil Nadu Guv, on mercy petition of AG Perarivalan

The top court has asked Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Thursday to consider the mercy petition of A.G. Perarivalan.

A.G. Perarivalan for now serving a life term in the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Earlier, the counsel of Perarivalan told apex court that his mercy petition was pending for over two years.

The counsel also added that his client has had undergone more than 24 years of solitary confinement in this case.

The counsel had approached Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Naveen Sinha and Justice K.M. Joseph.

It need be recalled that Perarivalan is among the seven convicts in the case.

It also needs mention that the central government said on August 10 in its report submitted in the court that releasing the convicts will set a “dangerous precedent”.
