Swaziland now to be known as eSwatini; announced by nation’s King

change of name also came about to mark 50 years since independence from British rule

A country’s name has been changed.

He is surely one of the few monarchs of the world but the king of Swaziland has announced that his country had changed its name to eSwatini.

The change of name also came about to mark 50 years since independence from British rule.

He said that the change was mandated to stop the country from being confused with Switzerland.

Meaning ‘place of the Swazi’, eSwatini is the Swazi language name for the tiny nation.

It is landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique.

King Mswati III declared the name change during independence day celebrations at a packed sports stadium in the second city of Manzini.

The name Swaziland angers some citizens as it is a mix of Swazi and English with the king adding that whenever they go abroad, people refer to them as Switzerland.
