Tamil Nadu moves SC; files contempt proceedings against central govt over Cauvery issue

Tamil Nadu as a state sought directions to the respondents

Days after the Supreme Court’s six-week deadline expired on constitution of Cauvery Management Board, the Tamil Nadu government moved to file a contempt proceedings against Union cabinet secretary PK Sinha and water resources secretary U P Singh.

The state has alleged wilful disobedience in carrying out court orders.

Tamil Nadu as a state sought directions to the respondents to purge the contempt by providing for Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.

The government recalled the February 16 court order directing the Central government to frame a scheme within a span of six weeks from the date of the judgment.

The two entities Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee would have to oversee smooth functioning and the rights of the states as determined by it are protected.

The court also held that no extension of time shall be granted on any ground. The period of six weeks expired on March 30.
