To counter China’s growing assertiveness, Japan could opt for 100 F-35s more

This will firmly place Japan militarily as it seeks to counter China's growing military presence in the region

It could be a significant change of scenario in military equations if the report that Japan is eyeing for an additional 100 F-35 fighters emerges to be true.

The F-35 are known to be stealth fighters and the total cost of the deal could go up as much as $8.8 billion.

This will firmly place Japan militarily as it seeks to counter China’s growing military presence in the region.

It is said that even US is keen to push more military sales to Japan.

President Donald Trump has been pointing to Washington’s huge trade deficit with Tokyo.

Japan has already decided to buy 42 F-35 stealth fighter jets from the US and is now considering purchasing as many as 100 more.

A local Japanese daily has reported the possible military sale.

To counter China, Tokyo is also considering upgrading its helicopter carriers so that they can transport and launch fighter jets.

It need be mentioned that Japan’s military has long been restricted to self-defence and the country relies heavily on the US under a bilateral security alliance.
