Disaster Management cell of Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) is organising a two days workshop and various other events on 3rd- 4th April next month to mark the 114th anniversary of Kangra earthquake at Dharamshala in association with Central University of Himachal Pradesh.
This was stated by ACS (Revenue) Manisha Nanda here today.
She said that the major portion of Himalayas fall in very high seismic zone and keeping this in view the workshop was being organised to create awareness and sensitize general public and prepare Government machinery to deal with any sudden hazard.
She further said during last century the state have been shaken by number of several earthquakes that includes Kangra earthquake in 1905 (M-8.0) in which 18,815 people were killed, later Kinnaur earthquake in 1975 (M-6.7) in which 60 people lost their lives and again in 1986 Dharamshala was rocked by M 5.7 earthquake.
Besides these major earthquakes, Himachal Pradesh have been rocked by about 250 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 and 66 earthquakes with magnitude of around 5.0.
Manisha Nanda said that to create awareness among government officials and general public during this event various activities viz: Shake Out Drill (Drop, Cover & Hold Evacuation Drill) gathering of students, teachers & other staff in designated area,
Lecture by the principal/head of various Institutions on Kangra earthquake, awareness pertaining to DO’s & DON’T’s for earthquake safety, display of pictures of damages caused by the Kangra earthquake etc would be conducted in Government and private institutes/ schools.
